What Kind of Cockroaches Does Florida Have?

The state of Florida is home to a diverse range of cockroach species. As a subtropical region, it provides an ideal habitat for these insects, leading to a wide variety of species residing in the area.

Here are some of the most common types of cockroaches found in Florida:

  • American cockroach. Also known as the Palmetto bug, this species is one of the most common types of roaches in Florida. They are large, usually around 1.5 inches long, and have a reddish-brown color. They prefer warm, damp environments and can often be found in basements, kitchens, and bathrooms.
  • Smokey brown cockroach. This is a close relative of the American cockroach but is slightly smaller in size. They are dark brown, almost black in color, and prefer outdoor habitats like tree bark and leaf litter.
  • Florida woods cockroach. Also known as the stinking cockroach, this species emits a foul odor when threatened. They are quite large, dark brown or black, and often found in damp outdoor areas like under mulch or around compost piles.
  • Australian cockroach. Despite its name, this species is commonly found in Florida. It's slightly smaller than the American cockroach and has yellow stripes on its wings. It prefers warm and humid environments and is often found in greenhouses and gardens.
  • Asian cockroach This species looks very similar to the German cockroach but prefers outdoor habitats. They are attracted to light and can often be found around windows and lamps in the evening.
  • German cockroach. This is one of the smallest species but also one of the most troublesome. They prefer indoor habitats and can often be found in kitchens and bathrooms. They reproduce quickly, making infestations difficult to control.
  • Oriental cockroach. Known for its strong smell, the Oriental cockroach is considered one of the dirtiest species. They are dark brown or black and prefer cool, damp environments. They can often be found in basements, drains, and crawl spaces.
  • Brown-banded cockroach. This species is smaller and not as common in Florida, but it can still be found in homes and buildings. True to their name, they have distinctive brown bands across their wings.
