What to Expect from the Fumigation Process

Structural fumigation is more involved than a standard pest control treatment. Understanding the general sequence helps you prepare and set realistic expectations before the work begins.

Inspection & Tenting

The process starts with a thorough inspection to confirm the pest type, the extent of activity, and whether full fumigation is warranted. Once scheduled, the entire structure is sealed under a fumigation tent. Fumigant gas (sulfuryl fluoride is the compound commonly used in structural tenting) is introduced at a concentration sufficient to penetrate all wood throughout the structure. Sulfuryl fluoride is odorless, colorless, and leaves no residue on surfaces, fabrics, or electronics after proper aeration.

Preparing Your Property

All residents, pets, and plants must vacate the property for the full treatment period. Depending on the size of the structure and the severity of the infestation, that window is typically 24 to 72 hours. Food, medications, and unsealed consumables must be removed or double-bagged in approved nylon bags before treatment begins. Vegetation within roughly two feet of the foundation perimeter may need to be trimmed back so the tent can seal properly to the ground.

Aeration, Clearance & Re-Entry

After the exposure period ends, the structure is aerated. A licensed professional uses specialized equipment to confirm that gas levels have dissipated to safe limits before anyone re-enters. Under Florida’s Structural Pest Control Act (Chapter 482), FDACS requires a separate fumigation certification to perform structural fumigation work. This is distinct from a general pest control license and is the standard any provider performing fumigation in Florida must meet.

One important note: fumigation addresses the active infestation present at the time of treatment. It doesn’t leave a residual barrier against future activity. A follow-up pest control program and periodic inspections are the practical way to catch new activity before it spreads.

Common Fumigation Questions

Does fumigation treat subterranean termites? No. Structural tenting addresses above-ground drywood termite populations. Subterranean termites live in soil and require a separate liquid treatment or baiting program.

How long will my home be unavailable? The process typically spans 24 to 72 hours. Re-entry isn’t permitted until a licensed professional confirms gas levels are safe.

Do I need to wash dishes and linens after the treatment? Sulfuryl fluoride fully dissipates during aeration and doesn’t leave surface residue. Your provider can give you a specific post-treatment checklist covering any additional steps.

Will fumigation prevent future termite infestations? Fumigation addresses the current infestation. Ongoing inspections and a pest management program after re-entry are the best way to catch new activity early.
