Gnat Control in Merritt Island

How to Identify No-See-Ums, Fungus Gnats & Fruit Flies

Correct identification matters because these insects develop in different places and create different problems. Biting midges, commonly called no-see-ums, sand flies, or sand gnats, are tiny blood-feeding flies in the Culicoides genus. They bite people outdoors, while the small flies commonly found around houseplants don’t.

Look for these common clues:

• No-see-ums: Activity and bites occur outdoors, often when the insects are difficult to see.
• Fungus gnats: Adults gather around moist houseplant soil, where their larvae live.
• Fruit flies: Adults gather around ripening produce and fermenting organic residue.

Larvae associated with houseplant infestations feed on fungi, algae, and plant roots in moist potting soil or other growing media. Allowing the growing medium to dry appropriately between waterings is the primary non-chemical way to reduce the moisture that supports them.

Why Merritt Island Conditions Support No-See-Ums

Florida has about 50 Culicoides species, and several are significant human pests. Mangrove areas, salt marshes, moist soil, mudflats, and freshwater edges provide prime breeding habitat. Similar moisture conditions occur around the Indian River Lagoon and Merritt Island waterways, making accurate identification and realistic control planning particularly important for outdoor areas.

These insects are generally most abundant during summer, with adult activity peaking in June, July, and August. They’re usually most active around sunrise and sunset, although conditions vary by property, especially where moisture and nearby breeding habitat remain available.

Reducing Exposure Around Outdoor Living Areas

Standard window screening doesn’t exclude biting midges because they’re small enough to pass through it. Screened enclosures need finer no-see-um mesh. Picaridin-based repellents are an option for personal protection against these pests.

Personal-protection measures can reduce exposure, but a property assessment can identify the pest and relevant conditions before we present service options. For indoor fungus gnats, managing moisture around houseplants remains an important part of addressing the source rather than focusing only on visible adults.
